604 Main Street Fire January 2 2017

At approx. 02:05 on January 2, 2017 Oxford Dispatch Center received a call reporting a structure fire at 604 Main Street in the north side of the Town of Oxford. The caller reported he could see flames coming from the front of the structure. First arriving Oxford Fire-EMS Department crews found heavy smoke throughout the three story structure, with a large volume of fire blowing out of the first floor where the Shagg Hair Salon was located. Oxford crews made entry to the first floor in an effort to extinguish the fire while mutual aid crews from The Town of Auburn Fire-Rescue Department made entry to the residential apartments above to do a search for victims. Shortly after their entry to the second floor, May Day was called due to deteriorating conditions and the crews becoming lost. The crew was able to self extricate out a 2nd floor window prior to being located by a rescue crew. No injuries were sustained. All residents were safely evacuated with no injuries reported. Smoke detectors were operating and alerted occupants. The fire went to a 4th alarm with multiple agencies from Fire District 7 providing assistance. The Fire Marshal was on scene also providing assistance. The investigation was performed by Trooper Fleming of the Fire Marshal's Office Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit in cooperation with Oxford Fire Chief Bemis. The fire has been deemed accidental in nature as a result of an unidentified electrical source. The Red Cross was called to assist the two occupants displaced from the upper floor apartments. Extensive damage to the building has resulted in the business being closed indefinably. Oxford Police Department provided traffic assistance. Oxford Fire Captain Jon Belanger was in charge of the incident.
